27th Annual Challenger Winter Rendezvous - January 27 to 29, 2017 - Chateau Montebello Report from the Advance Party of the Canadian Owners Association on January 25, 2017
The river surface is snow covered with about two inches of dry granular snow. There will be snow tonight, followed by more snow tomorrow and possibly more snow on Friday (60% chance). This being said, I would not recommend anyone to come and land on wheels at Montebello, but aircraft with skis or wheel/skis will be fine. The whole marina itself was covered with a firm crust of ice (from some freezing rain last week) with about two inches of snow under the crust before your feet hit the solid ice. The only place where we saw any water was near the docks, or should I say, right against the docks , actually. It is as if the water had not quite frozen underneath the docks. If you are careful and you don’t dig your boots into/through/under the thick ice crust near the docks, you will likely not see any of that little bit of water sitting between the ice crust and the bottom ice. We also saw several 4-wheelers and skidoos running up and down the skidoo tracks. This alone is a proof that the ice is good enough for our event. So, it is definitely a « GO » with the ice situation at Montebello 2017. Finally, un gros merci à Pierre pour m’avoir donné un sérieux coup de main aujourd’hui. Cheers!
